Corinne Teller Barraza for New Mexico District 30: For a Safer, Smarter, Stronger New Mexico
With roots in New Mexico stretching back generations and a proven track record in finance, education, and business, I’m committed to bringing responsible governance to District 30. I'll advance policies that improve education outcomes, enhance healthcare access, boost economic growth, and reduce crime—building the safer, smarter, stronger New Mexico our families deserve.
It is time for meaningful reform of New Mexico's educational system to better serve our children and strengthen our communities. Our student's educational outcomes cries for more focused instruction and our children are letting us know they need more support. I will advocate for our teachers to be able to do what I am hearing they entered the profession for- to teach. The State has left our youth behind for too long, so I will advocate for community hubs to address the social and emotional issues our children face outside of the classroom, by helping the whole family.
SAFER
We continue to see the effects crime has had on our State. New Mexico currently fails to hold people accountable for minor crimes, sending a message that breaking the law has no consequences. Hearing that New Mexican's want to feel safe again- in their homes and communities, I would like to see us mirror states with lower rates of people returning to crime, by fighting for real clear, consistent punishment for all crimes, because accountability prevents future victims.
STRONGER
New Mexico is one of the highest earning states with our gas/oil production and a promising tourism industry, due to our unique culture. Yet New Mexico has one of the highest percentages of low income individuals than other States. Loss of quality health care providers is putting us on the brink of a health crisis. By using our resources wisely and letting tax payers keep more of their tax dollars, we can bolster New Mexico businesses, create more jobs, and strengthen New Mexico families. I see New Mexico becoming one of the most desirable places to live, work and raise a family.
Why am I running?
When I was young, I lived in small towns across New Mexico. Life felt simple but full of energy. Later, growing up in Albuquerque, the city still felt like a big small town—friendly, welcoming, and safe. I never worried about walking down the street or visiting a neighborhood.
But in recent years, Albuquerque has changed. We hear about shootings almost nightly. We see homelessness and addiction on our streets, even in our most historic areas. Small business owners find it hard to survive, let alone open their doors. And as I’ve worked in education, I’ve seen a system that has lost its focus—leaving our children behind.
Across our state, small towns are struggling. Places that once thrived are now deserted. New Mexico continues to rank at the top of every “bad” list—crime, poverty, failing schools, poor healthcare. Every legislative session seems to bring more taxes, but little improvement to our daily lives.
I found myself frustrated—complaining even—and that’s not who I am. When I see a problem, I figure out how to fix it. So I began paying closer attention to government and politics. What I saw is that too many politicians forget about the people they represent. They push their own agendas instead of listening to their communities.
That’s why I’m running. I am one of you. I want good change for New Mexico—safer streets, stronger schools, thriving families, hard workers and businesses with a fighting chance. I’m stepping up to work hard for this community and to represent what you want, not what politicians in Santa Fe think you should have.
